West Newbury Police Department to Undergo Accreditation Assessment
WEST NEWBURY — Chief Art Reed is pleased to announce that a team of assessors from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) is scheduled to arrive on May 16 and 17 to begin examining various aspects of the West Newbury Police Department’s policies and procedures, operations and facilities.
Verification by the assessment team that the department meets MPAC standards is part of a voluntary process to gain state accreditation — a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards that have been established for the profession, by the profession.
“This evaluation process is extremely thorough and will demonstrate the professionalism and high quality standards that we hold our department to,” Chief Reed said. “I am very proud of all of the hard work by everyone to help get us to this point, and would especially like to thank our Accreditation Manager, Sgt. Dan Cena, for his dedication to preparing us for this assessment.”
The Massachusetts Police Accreditation Program consists of 257 mandatory standards as well as 125 optional standards. In order to achieve accreditation status, the West Newbury Police Department must meet all applicable mandatory standards as well as 55 percent of the optional standards.
These carefully selected standards include: Jurisdiction and Mutual Aid, Collection and Preservation of Evidence, Communications, Working Conditions, Crime Analysis, Community Involvement, Financial Management, Internal Affairs, Juvenile Operations, Patrol Administration, Public Information, Records, Traffic, Training, Drug Enforcement and Victim/Witness Assistance.
Achieving accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence. Anyone interested in learning more about this program may call Chief Reed or the department’s Accreditation Manager, Sgt. Dan Cena.
